Privacy Notice

Last updated: 16 August 2026

The Manuscript Rescue respects your privacy and aims to be clear about what personal information is collected, why it is used, who receives it, and how long it is kept.

This Privacy Notice applies when you use this website, join the mailing list, use one of our diagnostic tools and choose to submit your details, buy a digital product, contact The Manuscript Rescue, or use one of our editorial or publishing services.

1. Who is responsible for your personal data?

Data controller: Wendy Jane Woodcock, trading as The Manuscript Rescue

Guernsey, Channel Islands

Email: hello@themanuscriptrescue.com

The Manuscript Rescue is established in the Bailiwick of Guernsey and processes personal data in accordance with The Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2017 and other applicable privacy legislation.

2. What information do we collect?

The information collected depends on how you interact with The Manuscript Rescue. It may include:

  • your name and email address;
  • correspondence and enquiry details;
  • information about your manuscript, book or publishing project;
  • order, transaction and billing information;
  • manuscript files, working documents and related material you choose to provide;
  • information you submit through an online diagnostic or resource form; and
  • technical website information such as IP address, browser or device information, pages visited and cookie-related data.

3. Diagnostic tools and free resources

The Manuscript Rescue’s online diagnostic tools are designed to minimise the personal data they collect.

  • Your answers and results are calculated entirely within your browser.
  • The diagnostic tools do not send your answers to or store them on The Manuscript Rescue’s WordPress server.
  • The tools do not save your answers in localStorage or sessionStorage on your device.
  • Google Analytics does not receive your individual diagnostic answers.
  • If you use a tool but do not submit the email form, The Manuscript Rescue keeps no record of your individual answers.

If you choose to submit an email form, the information shown on that form and relevant diagnostic information are sent directly from your browser to MailerLite. This information does not pass through or become stored on The Manuscript Rescue’s WordPress server.

Depending on the form, information sent to MailerLite may include your first name, email address, publishing status, the symptom or problem selected, the route identified by the tool, your score or result band, and your marketing-consent choice.

Submitting an email address to receive a checklist, resource or result does not require you to agree to marketing. Where a separate marketing checkbox is provided, marketing emails are sent only if you choose to give that consent.

4. Mailing list and marketing

We use MailerLite to manage our mailing list and send email communications. If you choose to join the mailing list, we may send practical self-publishing information, publishing news, Fix Kit and service updates, and occasional promotional emails.

The lawful basis for direct email marketing is your consent. The Manuscript Rescue uses double opt-in for mailing-list subscriptions.

You can withdraw your consent at any time by using the unsubscribe link in any marketing email. Withdrawing consent does not affect the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.

5. Enquiries and correspondence

If you contact The Manuscript Rescue, we use the information you provide to respond to your enquiry and, where relevant, to discuss or provide the services you request.

Depending on the circumstances, the lawful basis will normally be taking steps at your request before entering into a contract, performance of a contract, or our legitimate interests in responding to correspondence and administering the business.

6. Digital products and purchases

Digital products such as Fix Kits are sold using Payhip. When you make a purchase, Payhip and the relevant payment provider process information needed to complete the transaction. This may include your name, email address, billing information, order details, IP address and other transaction information.

The Manuscript Rescue receives the information needed to fulfil and administer your purchase but does not receive your full payment-card details.

The lawful basis is normally performance of our contract with you and, where applicable, compliance with legal, accounting or taxation obligations.

7. Editorial, manuscript and publishing services

If you engage The Manuscript Rescue for a Clarity Session, manuscript assessment, editing, publishing or another professional service, we may process your contact information, manuscript, book metadata, author information, correspondence, publishing information and other material needed to carry out the work you request.

The principal lawful basis is performance of a contract with you, or taking steps at your request before entering into that contract.

Where you ask us to work with a third-party service on your behalf – for example Amazon KDP, an ISBN service, a book designer or another agreed publishing provider – relevant information may be supplied to that service where necessary to carry out your instructions.

8. Personal information contained in manuscripts

Manuscripts, particularly memoirs, autobiographies, family histories, case studies and other non-fiction works, may contain information about living people other than the author. This can include sensitive or special-category information.

Where this information appears in material supplied by a client, its source will normally be the manuscript and supporting material supplied by that client. The Manuscript Rescue does not ordinarily collect that information independently from the people discussed in the manuscript.

Manuscript material is processed only as necessary to provide the editorial, assessment or publishing service requested and is not used for unrelated marketing.

Where additional safeguards or lawful conditions are required for sensitive personal data, The Manuscript Rescue will apply them as appropriate and may decline or pause work where a project creates an unacceptable privacy, confidentiality or legal risk.

9. Website analytics and hosting

The website uses Google Analytics to understand how visitors use the site. Analytics cookies are non-essential and should only be activated after a visitor chooses to allow analytics cookies.

Google Analytics receives website-usage information such as page views. It does not receive the answers you enter into The Manuscript Rescue diagnostic tools.

The website is hosted using GoDaddy infrastructure. GoDaddy and its secure-server systems may receive technical and operational information associated with page requests in order to provide, secure and maintain the hosting service.

Further information about cookies is available in our Cookie Notice.

10. Who may receive your information?

Depending on the service you use, personal data may be processed by:

  • MailerLite, for mailing-list and resource delivery;
  • Payhip and its payment providers, for digital-product purchases;
  • GoDaddy, for website hosting and infrastructure;
  • Google, where you consent to Google Analytics;
  • email, communications or file-storage providers used to operate the business;
  • professional publishing or technical providers where their involvement is necessary to provide a service you requested; and
  • professional advisers, regulators or public authorities where disclosure is legally required or reasonably necessary.

The Manuscript Rescue does not sell your personal information.

11. Transfers outside the Bailiwick of Guernsey

Some service providers used by The Manuscript Rescue operate internationally or may process information outside the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Where personal data is transferred internationally, appropriate safeguards will be used as required by applicable data-protection law.

12. How long do we keep information?

We keep personal information only for as long as it is reasonably needed for the purpose for which it was collected.

Information Normal retention approach
Mailing-list information While you remain subscribed. After unsubscribe, minimal information may be kept where necessary to record and respect the opt-out.
Diagnostic/resource form data where you have not joined the mailing list Normally up to 12 months after submission, unless it is needed for an active enquiry, contract or legal obligation.
General enquiries that do not become client work Normally up to 12 months after the enquiry is closed.
Working manuscripts, editing files and manuscript backups Normally 12 months after the project is completed, then securely deleted unless there is a specific reason agreed with the client to retain them longer.
Printed manuscript material and working printouts Normally 12 months after the project is completed, then securely destroyed.
Customer, invoice, payment and tax records For the statutory record-keeping period. Guernsey income-tax records are generally retained for six years following the end of the year in which the relevant return is submitted.
Complaints, disputes or legal matters For as long as reasonably necessary to resolve and document the matter and meet any applicable legal obligations.

13. How manuscript material is stored

Electronic manuscripts and working backups are stored on an external storage drive with access restricted to the person carrying out the work. The external drive is kept in secure locked storage when not in use. Printed manuscript material and other physical working papers are also kept in secure locked storage.

When the applicable retention period ends, electronic files are securely deleted and printed material is securely destroyed.

14. Security

The Manuscript Rescue takes proportionate technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against accidental loss, unauthorised access, alteration, disclosure or destruction. Access to client information and manuscript material is restricted to those who genuinely need it to provide the requested service or operate the business.

15. Automated decision-making

The diagnostic tools use automated logic to calculate scores, result bands or suggested routes from the answers you provide. These results are practical publishing guidance only. They do not make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you.

16. Is providing your information compulsory?

Joining the mailing list and agreeing to marketing are optional. You may use the diagnostic tools without giving us your email address.

If you ask us to send you a resource, reply to an enquiry, sell you a product or provide a professional service, we will need enough information to fulfil that request. If necessary information is not provided, we may be unable to supply the requested product or service.

17. Your data-protection rights

Under Bailiwick data-protection law, your rights may include:

  • the right to be informed about how your personal data is used;
  • the right to request access to personal data held about you;
  • the right to ask for inaccurate or incomplete information to be corrected;
  • the right, in appropriate circumstances, to ask for personal data to be erased;
  • the right, in appropriate circumstances, to ask for processing to be restricted;
  • the right to object to certain processing, including direct marketing;
  • the right, where applicable, to receive or transfer certain personal data in a portable format;
  • rights relating to certain forms of automated decision-making; and
  • where processing is based on consent, the right to withdraw that consent at any time.

These rights are not absolute in every circumstance. To exercise a data-protection right, email hello@themanuscriptrescue.com.

18. Complaints

If you have a concern about how The Manuscript Rescue has handled your personal information, please contact us first so that we can investigate and respond. You also have the right to complain to the Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA), Guernsey.

19. Changes to this Privacy Notice

We may update this Privacy Notice when our website, services, suppliers or data-processing practices change, or where a change is required by law or regulatory guidance. The current version will show the latest revision date at the top.
